IB Units of Inquiry
This year you will be working of units of study, where you will be connecting all content areas into units of inquiry or trans-disciplinary themes. During these units you will be exploring, experimenting, analyzing, researching, questioning, connecting, and synthesizing. You will be spending longer periods of time digging deeply into one central idea and try and connect our work into all areas of study. At the end of each unit you will have an opportunity to decide on a final activity to share with your class.
Reading and Language Arts
This year we will spend much of our day working together to improve our reading skills through targeted comprehension strategies. Using a variety of gripping and challenging text, we will explore many different genres. We will also put more emphasis on nonfiction reading and responding in writing across the curriculum. This will help us improve our reading comprehension, reading strategies skills, fluency; as well as increase our vocabulary.
Writing
In fourth grade you will do tons of writing. You will have many opportunities to write for fun, where you will create your own stories and original writing through the use of the writing process. You will become expert brain- stormers, revisers, editors and publishers. In addition, you also have time to respond to all the great reading you are doing by writing!!!
Math
You can expect to do some amazing things in math this year. You will be spending a lot of your time working through problems in collaboration with your classmates. You will be asked not to just solve the problems, but explain your thinking. With a problem solving approach to mathematics, the students will be using interactive math notebooks to reinforce and enhance the math standards. Along with other supplemental resources, you can expect to become mighty fine mathematicians! Don't forget you will have to memorize those pesky multiplication and division facts. Can you complete 100 problems in fewer than 3 minutes?
